That guy is a Dr. Martin Cooper of Motorola, with the DynaTAC 8000X.
Guess that would make quite a large lump in your trouser pocket Dr??
If the good Dr lost his phone (wow, is that possible? You couldn't lost that thing down the back of the sofa!!) - anyway he could still have had a backup of the numbers he had stored on the handset (what all 4 of them) on his allmynumbers.co.uk account.
Yep you can Bacup your mobile here for a whole year for less than the price of a cafe latte at most coffee houses.
Why don't you check it out.
Another couple of sensible people have popped along to our allmynumbers mobile and SIM backup service and opted to try the service out free for a month using the FREE1 promo code. Any hey, that's great.
Some guy wanted to use the allmynumbers wap service as he said he spent most of his time on the road, so if he lost his phone with his prospect numbers, he'd pretty much lose money.
With the wap service, he can access his contact list from any wap device. Cool eh??
I did a survey three weeks ago where I asked people in the street how much of an inconvenience it would be to them, if their mobile phone was lost or stolen. They had to choose a score between 1 and 6 where 1 was no inconvenience and 6 was extreme inconvenience. Here are the results:
100 people asked...
1 - 3%
2 - 2%
3 - 9%
4 - 11%
5 - 31%
6 - 44%
So you can see that the vast majority of people would consider the loss or theft of their mobile a major inconvenience. Why don't people have phone insurance and backups of their numbers? Remember my site offers a mobile number backup for very little, and I'm looking to make a deal with a phone insurance company soon so I'll be able to bring you the full service...
How would you have scored it? I think I will try and create an online survey in this blog somewhere. Not sure how to do that yet, but keep visiting and one day I'll get it sorted.
When I carried out the survey, I asked a lot of other questions, and I think I'll publish the results over the next few weeks, as some of you might find them interesting...
As a side thought, why not see if you're mobile number is listed at allnumbers.com's free mobile phone directory. If you want to be traced, you can add your number free.
World, I was out last night at a party...still have a headache this morning.
Took my mobile with me (yeh sad I know), but luckily did not lose it. How I don't know as I left it lying on the table whilst I was up on the dance floor with my good lady.
As you all know by now, if it had been stolen, I would have had a backup of the serial numbers, and contacts in my allmynumbers account.
Well, back again. Have been sick so just getting around to updating
this.
Believe it or not, almost 200 people have been along to allmynumbers after reading this blog, so these things can make a difference. I am amazed. A few of
these visitors have emailed me asking for more details on the survey I
carried out (see previous post). Well I am more than happy to oblige,
but I think I will publish parts over time, and that way you might be
tempted to come back here for updates, or maybe subscribe to my feed.
Here we go...
The second question I asked during the survey was to give an indication
of how easy they would find it to recall ALL of the numbers and contacts
they had stored in their mobile phone. Again they had to choose a
number between 1 and 6 where 1 was very easy and 6 was very difficult.
Here are the results:
1 - 1%
2 - 0
3 - 0
4 - 2%
5 - 13%
6 - 84%
So you can see that a huge majority would find it very difficult to
recover their precious numbers. Only 1 person said it would be no
problem for them because they only had 3 numbers in their phone!!
I am repeating myself I know, but there is no excuse not to have a
backup of the number in your mobile or cell phone. It is a common sense
and logical thing to do.
It is true that phones are getting much smarter, and you can even watch
TV on them nowadays, but you can still lose them. How many times do I
have to say this? And you can still have them stolen. In fact the more
modern and gadgety the phone, the more likely it is that it will get
stolen. All the more reason to get along to
allmynumbers and create an
account. Remember, it will only take around 15 minutes to create your backup, and once you have created it, you can access it from most wap devices. So even if you just forget your phone one day, you can still check your numbers by borrowing a friends phone, or logging into your account from a PC at your workplace.
I think next time I will also mention Dell laptops, and see what you think of them. I have a Dell laptop and I don't think they're as good value for money as people believe. More of that later.
It has happened to me. Drunk as a skunk and west went my mobile phone. leaned over to pick up something from the floor, and my mobile phone went straight out my pocket and into my drink. Ruined phone and lost all my numbers. Never again though, found this cool site,
allmynumbers.co.uk
Sorry I've been a way for a week or so. I said I would post more results of that survey. By the way, if any newspaper want details of the full survey in order to publish it, just let me know.
Okay, the next question I asked the 100 people was this...If your phone was lost or stolen, could could provide the police or your network operator with the following information:
1) - Your handset serial number
2) - Your IMEI number
3) - Your SIM serial number
It will probably be no surprise to you to discover that 100% could not provide all three. Now if you can tell the network operator all three numbers, they can put an immediate block on the phone so it will no longer work.
People who go for an account at allmynumbers, can add these security details (and much more) for an unlimited number of handsets. So say you are a family of 4. Mum and Dad have at least one phone each (I personally have a work mobile and a personal mobile) and one work mobile between them, and the 2 kids have one each. That's 5 mobiles in one family. If dad had an account with allmynumbers.co.uk - he could make a record of everyone's numbers, and a record of the serial numbers of each handset. That could be literally hundreds of numbers (if my kids are anything to go by it certainly would. They have most of the school recorded in their phones!) and details of the serial numbers of each handset.
Now if one of the kids loses their phone (or someone steals it from them) dad can quickly obtain all the details and let the police and network operator know. Also when he buys the kid a nice new mobile, they can easily add all their numbers back into the new handset.
Everyone's happy.
